Caritas hosts lunch for Italians to encounter migrants, refugees

Rome, Italy, Jun 20, 2018 / 12:28 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The papal charity Caritas Internationalis hosted a lunch Tuesday in Rome with immigrants and refugees, hoping to foster a “culture of encounter” during its Global Action Week.

Caritas' June 17-24 Global Action Week is part of its two-year Share the Journey initiative. Launched by Pope Francis in September 2017, the project is aimed at encouraging a “culture of encounter” and bolstering efforts to welcome warmly immigrants and refugees.

The goal of the project is to shed light on both the challenges and effects of migration at every stage of the journey in order to promote a “shift in thinking” on the issue. It has the support of the ACT Alliance, which is a network of 145 Christian agencies and a variety of other religious congregations and civil society groups worldwide.

As part of the action week, Caritas branches in all regions of the world will organize shared meals with immigrants and refugees, including the June 19 lunch at Rome's Termini train station, as well as other events aimed at raising awareness and prompting interaction with refugees.

Korkiss Diallo, an Ivorian emigrant living in Italy, spoke at the June 19 lunch about the prejudice migrants face in their new homes.

He said he is not a bad person, but was forced to leave his home country and search for a better life elsewhere due to war.

“Many people think that Africans are bad, that they steal, that they do things that are illegal,” Diallo told journalists.

“I came here I think to have a good life and to have work,” he said, adding that each country has both good and bad people, “so not all are bad, to say that all are bad is not true.”

Diallo, 23, left Ivory Coast in 2011 when violence erupted following the election of a new president. Diallo's family had supported the losing candidate, and feared they would be targets of the violent upheaval, so he left.

He travelled to Italy from Libya by boat. He had been told the boat ride would only last five hours, but he ended up spending a week stranded at sea with other migrants before being rescued in Italian waters.

Diallo then arrived in Sardinia in 2014, where he sought asylum. He then made his way to Rome and was put in touch with Caritas, who suggested that he participate in “A Refugee in My Home,” in which families welcome migrants or refugees to live with them.

The young migrant agreed, and was placed with an Italian family, who have accepted him as part of the family. Diallo soon learned Italian, enrolled in educational courses, and took a pizza-making class.

He now works seasonal jobs at pizza restaurants in Italy’s northern province of Trentino, and every Sunday he still has lunch with his Italian “parents” who initially took him in.

Diallo said he left behind a little sister and a grandmother in Ivory Coast, and plans to visit them for a month this summer before coming back to Italy. He said he eventually wants to bring his sister to Italy with him.

Speaking of the journey he took to get to Italy, Diallo said “I would not recommend to any of my friends in Africa to do this path.”

Speaking of his decision to travel through Libya, Diallo said he did not want to go “because it's a country without a government. I entered Libya because I didn't have another choice.”

“To all my friends in Africa I have said, that path is not good to take into Italy. If you don't have another possibility, stay in Africa.”

However, Diallo said he was “surprised” by the welcome he received, and has gone on to accomplish things he did not think would be possible thanks the support he was given from the beginning of his arrival.

Tommaso, Diallo's Italian “little brother,” told journalists that Korkiss “has taught a lot to our family, and I hope we have also taught something to him.”

Raffaella, Diallo’s Italian “mother,” told CNA her family chose to accept Diallo into their home because of Pope Francis' call to welcome migrants. After hearing the pope's petition, she said she felt moved, so she talked it through with her family, and the agreed to take someone in.

Raffaella said she has tried to create a stable home environment, and to teach Diallo “the same thing I taught my children; respect for people, respect for the rules, how to be a good citizen.”

Regarding the culture of fear and suspicion surrounding migrants, Raffaella said she has experienced this first-hand, especially after they first decided to welcome Diallo into their home.

However, she said the experience of her family has been wonderful, and they have no regrets about the decision to lend a hand to Diallo when he was in need.

She said part of the process has also meant learning how to accept and interact with other cultural and religious traditions. In Europe, “we are more individualistic,” she said, whereas “in African culture they are much more communal,” and often decisions are made together.

In terms of religion, Raffaella said she has also learned to have greater respect for non-Catholics. Diallo is Muslim, so she said the family has had the opportunity to learn things about the Muslim religion they did not know before, and they have learned “to respect him … and his times of prayer.”

In a message supporting the Caritas lunch, Pope Francis urged Catholics to participate in similar events organized throughout the world as part of the action week, such as meals or other activities, which he said raise awareness “on the global scale to support migrants and refugees.”

“Today, I would like to invite everyone – migrants, refugees, Caritas workers and institutions – to grasp the features of this journey that have marked you the most: what hope does your journey lead to? Try to share this thought and celebrate what we have in common,” he said. Reported by CNA 2 hours ago.

Racing Tips: Aussie Warrior ready to battle his way to Jubilee success

Racing Tips: Aussie Warrior ready to battle his way to Jubilee success WITHOUT doubt the best race on tomorrow’s final day at Royal Ascot is the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (4.20pm).

Some of the world’s best six-furlong horses line-up, including our very own Harry Angel, Ireland’s Merchant Navy, America’s Bound To Nowhere and Australia’s *REDKIRK WARRIOR.*

Harry Angel is Europe’s best sprinter, but he has been beaten on all four visits to Ascot, so I’m happy to pass him over at 5/2 with Star Sports.

The cricket hasn’t been fun for the Aussies this week, but Redkirk Warrior can give them something to cheer at 4/1 with Star Sports.

He won his second career start at this course when trained by William Haggas in 2014, incredibly over 1m2f.

He then went to Hong Kong before moving to Australia where he has been reborn as a sprinter, claiming back-to-back Group Ones on his last two starts.

Tomorrow’s rival Merchant Navy was behind him in the Newmarket Handicap in March and I expect him to confirm the form.

John Gosden’s Dreamfield could be the proverbial Group horse in a handicap in the Wokingham (5.00pm) off his mark of just 103, but I’m prepared to leave him alone at 4/1.

Instead I am going to chance my arm on two at much bigger prices in the shape of *BLUE DE VEGA* and *TUPI*, who can both be backed each-way at 16/1.

The former caught the eye when running on late in the Epsom Dash over five furlongs and this looks to have been the plan.

The latter was sixth in last year’s Diamond Jubilee, beaten just 3½ lengths by The Tin Man, but is now down to a mark of 100.

McPhy Energy : Ferguson Marine to develop World-first Renewables-Powered Hydrogen Ferry - HySeas III

*HySeas III*
Media Release Monday 18 June 2018

*Ferguson Marine to develop World-first Renewables-Powered Hydrogen Ferry - HySeas III*

At Today's Smart Shipping Symposium hosted by the City of Glasgow College Faculty of Nautical Studies, Jim McColl OBE, Chairman and Chief Executive of Clyde Blowers Capital announced that Port Glasgow-based *Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited* has successfully led a European consortium in a bid for EU funding support to pave the way for the building and launch of *the world's first sea-going car and passenger ferry fuelled by Hydrogen. *

The supported development is expected to cost around €12.6 million of which €9.3million has been awarded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation fund.

*The vessel's fuel will be produced from renewable electricity marking a paradigm shift towards entirely emissions-free marine transport.*

*HySeas III*, jointly led by shipyard, *Ferguson Marine* and the *University of St Andrews*, includes *Orkney Islands Council*; *Kongsberg Maritime* (Norway); *Ballard Power Systems Europe* (Denmark); *McPhy* (France); *DLR* - German Aerospace Center; and* Interferry* (Belgium/US) the global trade association for ferry operators and suppliers.

Employing Ballard technology, already proven across millions of miles of road transport, the initial objective is to construct and prove the vessel's modular drive train onshore, testing for stress and durability under conditions employing real-world data from existing vessels.

*Orkney *

The successful test will allow a vessel to be constructed, in the already assured knowledge that such a vessel can operate safely and efficiently around Scotland's challenging coast. The vessel is planned to operate in and around Orkney - which is already producing hydrogen in volume from constrained - and hence otherwise wasted - renewable energy.

Chief Naval Architect Chris Dunn of Ferguson Marine said, "Over recent years Ferguson Marine has been at the global forefront of green marine propulsion technology development.  This exciting project is yet another positive step on that journey and puts us firmly on track to deliver the world's first zero emission, hydrogen fuel cell powered commercial ROPAX ferry in 2020."

Ferguson Marine Chief Executive, Gerry Marshall, added "We now have one of the most innovative and competitive shipyards in Europe which is capable of delivering ground-breaking projects for Inverclyde, Scotland and beyond. HySeas III is a living example of how it can be possible to lead the world in marine technology."

Project Coordinator, Dr. Martin Smith from the University of St. Andrews said, "This is a very exciting stage to be at now. This opens the real possibility of Scotland and her key European partners delivering another world-first not simply in ship-building but also in building sustainable local sources of fuelling in parallel."

Jim McColl OBE, whose Clyde Blowers Capital now owns the once-threatened shipyard, commented, "Ferguson's was the last full-service commercial shipyard on in the River Clyde. Since taking over in 2014, we have invested £25 million to bring the yard up to the world-class standards with a new, skilled workforce, that has provided the confidence in leading this hugely important, ground-breaking project."

*Innovative partnership*

Previously in 2012, Ferguson's launched the MV Hallaig, the world's first ever battery hybrid ferry. The redeveloped yard achieved another first in November 2017 when it launched the MV Glen Sannox, the first UK ferry build with dual-fuel capability (marine diesel & LNG). The Glen Sannox' sister vessel is currently under construction at the shipyard.

The University of St Andrews, the 3^rd Oldest University in the English-speaking world, is home to world-class research and development in hydrogen, battery and other energy technologies. A key part of the development aspect is the transferal of knowledge and expertise into real-world applications - not least in stretching the boundaries of what has previously been thought of and achieved.

Dr. Smith from The University, along with Jim Anderson at CMAL (Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited) initiated the HySeas programme in 2012. Support from Scottish Enterprise allowed the idea to be taken from an early feasibility study to the point where the focus can now shift into test and delivery.

Dr. Smith previously played a leading role in the introduction of hydrogen buses into Scotland, a development which is now set to move beyond Aberdeen with Dundee currently following and other Scottish cities considering fleets of their own.

*European Backing*

Support will be provided by Horizon 2020, the EU's largest ever Research and Innovation programme to date with a budget of c.€80 billion over 7 years (2014 to 2020).

The HySeas III project formally begins on the 1st of July.

Tim Cook Reaffirms Apple's Commitment to Ireland After Tax Dispute and Abandoned Data Center Plans

Just weeks after Apple abandoned its plans to build a $1 billion data center in Ireland, and amid a major Irish tax dispute with the European Commission, Apple CEO Tim Cook ensures his company remains committed to the country.
In a recent interview with The Irish Times, Cook said Apple appreciated the support it received from the community who wanted the data center to be there, and reaffirmed Apple's commitment to Ireland as a whole.

"We loved the community there. Fortunately we had great support from the community who wanted us there. That's probably the biggest disappointment from our point of view; we felt we could have been in the community and made a lot of friends like we had in Cork and grown the relationship over time," Cook said. "But we understand and respect the process."

Of course, not all local residents wanted the data center there, as concerns were raised about its potential effects on local animals, flooding on a neighboring golf course, and its close proximity to a shut-down nuclear power plant.

Last October, Apple finally won approval for construction by the Irish High Court, after an appeal by two individuals against the decision was dismissed. However, the appellants decided to take their case to the country's Supreme Court, resulting in Apple abandoning its plans just before the hearing was to occur.

"Despite our best efforts, delays in the approval process have forced us to make other plans and we will not be able to move forward with the data centre," Apple said in a statement ahead of the Supreme Court heading on Thursday.

"While disappointing, this setback will not dampen our enthusiasm for future projects in Ireland as our business continues to grow," the company said, citing plans to expand its European headquarters in County Cork where it employs over 6,000 people.

Cook added that Apple "didn't come to Ireland for tax," nearly two years after the European Commission ruled that the company received illegal aid from the country, ordering it to repay 13 billion euros to the country. Apple and Ireland are both appealing the ruling, as escrow payments begin for now.

"We came to Ireland in 1980 because we saw a community we thought we could grow, and could do a number of things to support the continent. We've stayed on course on that over almost four decades. It hasn't been a straight line – life isn't a straight line, things go up and down – but it's always been in a trajectory that is increasing. I don't anticipate that changing."

Cook visited Ireland this week, where he met with the country's head of government Leo Varadkar in Dublin, before heading to Cork, where Apple's European headquarters are located. Apple recently expanded the campus with a new building that provides space for an additional 1,400 employees.
Apple's recently updated European Job Creation page reveals that it now supports 1.7 million jobs across Europe, including around 1.5 million jobs attributable to the App Store ecosystem, some 17,000 of which are based in Ireland.

Apple's website notes that it "has been based in Cork for over 35 years and now directly employs 6,000 people throughout Ireland supporting all aspects of the business." The company also says its Irish team has "doubled in size over the last five years and includes over 80 different nationalities."

All in all, this amounts to a good PR campaign for Apple, echoing much of what it said in its Message to the Apple Community in Europe a few years ago.Tags: Tim Cook, Ireland

*IN SOFT TISSUE SARCOMA WITH NBTXR3*

· *Trial achieved its primary endpoint of **pathological Complete Response Rate*
· *Trial achieved its secondary endpoint in operability (R0 rate) *
· *NBTXR3 demonstrated significant superiority and clinical benefits for patients versus standard of care *
· *Safety profile confirmed*
· *Randomized trial validated the first-in-class mode of action of NBTXR3*

*Paris, France and Cambridge, Massachusetts, June 21, 2018 *- NANOBIOTIX (Euronext: NANO - ISIN: FR0011341205), a late clinical-stage nanomedicine company pioneering new approaches in the treatment of cancer, announced today positive topline results of the Phase II/III act.in.sarc trial evaluating NBTXR3 in Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS).

"Data are exceptional and show without any doubt an improvement of radiation therapy impact with a significant number of complete response. NBTXR3 can bring real benefit to patients and it can change the standard of care. This innovation will play a role in many other indications and particularly where radiotherapy is used alone."
Pr. Sylvie Bonvalot, MD, Head of Sarcoma and Complex Tumor Surgery Unit at Institut Curie, Paris, France and Global Principal Investigator of the PII/III study

NBTXR3 is a first-in-class product with a new mode of action physically destroying cancer cells when activated by radiation therapy.  NBTXR3 is designed to directly destroy tumors and activate the immune system for both local control and systemic disease treatment.

The Phase II/III study was a prospective, randomized (1:1), multinational, open label and active controlled two-armed study of 180 patients with locally advanced STS. The objective of the Phase II/III trial was to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of NBTXR3 activated by radiotherapy compared to the standard of care (radiotherapy alone). Patients have been treated with the standard dose of radiation (25x2 Gy) and efficacy endpoints have been measured on surgically resected tumors.

*Primary endpoint achieved in the intend-to-treat population (ITT)*
The primary endpoint is the pathological Complete Response Rate (pCRR) defined as the rate of patients showing less than 5% of residual viable cancer cells in the tumor post treatment. This primary endpoint is related to NBTXR3's mode of action and product efficacy.  Twice as many patients (16.1% vs 7.9%) achieved a pathological Complete Response (pCR) with NBTXR3 compared to the control arm (p = 0.0448). The significant difference observed between both arms validates the superiority of the treatment with NBTXR3 versus radiation alone.

*Secondary Endpoint achieved in the ITT - Resection margins status and operability*
The main secondary endpoint is the resection margin status evaluating the quality of surgery. The main objective is to achieve compartmental clean margins (negative margin defined as R0) i.e. no more cancer cells found within the surgical margins. NBTXR3 demonstrated a statistically significant increase in R0 surgical margin rate compared to radiotherapy alone (relative increase of 20%, p = 0.042). The resection with negative margins is a validated surrogate endpoint for systemic and long-term benefit for patients such as local progression free survival (PFS) and distant PFS.

Pr Jean-Yves Blay, MD, Director of the Centre Léon Bérard, Lyon, France, commented, "I am amazed by the difference of Response Rate, it is extremely uncommon to double the Rate of Complete histological Response and I do not see any other strategy able to accomplish that. Even more impressive is the R0 rate, which is increased by more than 20% compared to an average rate of 64%. This difference is really impressive, considering that R0 impacts patients relapses and survival."

*Safety and feasibility*
NBTXR3 demonstrated a good local tolerance among this patient's population. Findings showed a very similar radiation-related safety in both arms. The patients in both the control and tested arms of the study received the planned radiotherapy (dose and schedule).

Notably, feasibility and follow-up of surgery were also equivalent. Acute immune adverse events of short duration observed in 7.9% of patients.

The Injection site caused pain in 13.5% of patients. In addition, 6.7% of patients experienced grade 1 injection site hematoma / ecchymosis.

Regarding long-term toxicity, less serious adverse events were reported for NBTXR3 arm.

*Regulatory strategy and CE mark*
The positive results from this study support and further validate the European regulatory strategy of the previously submitted CE marking application in STS. The company will submit the new data as a supplement to the European Notified Body in a timely manner.

*Next steps*
The Company will present the results at an upcoming international medical conference.

The clinical validation of NBTXR3's physical mode of action in a very heterogeneous and hard-to-treat disease strengthens the universal profile of the product and confirms the development strategy in multiple indications.

Currently, the company is evaluating NBTXR3 in seven clinical trials with a focus on head and neck cancers and Immuno-Oncology programs.

David Raben MD, Professor of Radiation Oncology, University of Colorado Cancer Center, CO, USA, commented, "These results from a Phase III study are impressive in a notoriously difficult disease like Soft Tissue Sarcoma. These cancers are generally less sensitive to radiation and previous attempts to improve local control with chemo-radiation regimens were considered too toxic. This study substantiates the medical benefit of safely enhancing the effect of radiation therapy with novel physics-based approaches delivered locally within the cancer. In addition, this product may potentiate a pro-inflammatory environment suitable for immune enabling or DNA damage inhibitor drugs. These findings set the foundation for additional studies in areas such as head and neck cancer and perhaps in areas such as high-risk prostate, bladder or pancreas cancer."

*About PII/III clinical trial (act.in.sarc study)*
Nanobiotix and its partner, PharmaEngine recruited 180 patients in 43 sites across 13 countries in Europe and Asia. The Global Principal Investigator is Pr. Sylvie Bonvalot, MD, PhD (Institut Curie, Paris, France).

*Primary endpoint *
*Pathological complete response rate (pCRR):* A pathological Complete Response is defined as the presence of less than 5% of residual malignant viable cells in the surgically removed tissue. The primary endpoint compared the proportion of patients presenting pathological Complete Response (pCR) between the two arms. This was determined by an independent pathological central review according to EORTC score (Wardelmann et al., 2016).

*Main secondary endpoint*
*Resection margin status*: The resection margin status is evaluating the quality of surgery. Surgery remains the mainstay of care for locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma. The primary surgical objective is the complete removal of the tumor with negative resection margins (R0). Several retrospective studies suggest that surgical margin status predict the risk of local and distant recurrence. In particular, negative surgical margins are significantly correlated to increased patients' survival.

*About NBTXR3*
NBTXR3 is a first-in-class product designed to destroy, when activated by radiotherapy:

· tumors through physical cell death
· metastasis due to immunogenic cell death leading to activation of the immune system.

NBTXR3 has a high degree of biocompatibility, requires one single administration before the whole radiotherapy treatment and has the ability to fit into current worldwide standards of radiation care.

NBTXR3 is actively being evaluated in head and neck cancer with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity or oropharynx in elderly and frail patients unable to receive chemotherapy or cetuximab with very limited therapeutic options. The Phase I/II trial has already delivered very promising results regarding the local control of the tumors.

Nanobiotix is running an Immuno-Oncology development program . In the U.S., the Company received the FDA's approval to launch a clinical study of NBTXR3 activated by radiotherapy in combination with anti-PD1 antibodies in lung, and head and neck cancer patients (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and non-small cell lung cancer).

The other ongoing studies are treating patients with liver cancers (hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastasis), locally advanced or unresectable rectal cancer in combination with chemotherapy, head and neck cancer in combination with concurrent chemotherapy, and prostate adenocarcinoma.

The first market authorization process (CE Marking) is ongoing in Europe in the soft tissue sarcoma indication.
