Panama are organised and tough but hoping for a miracle against England

Panama are organised and tough but hoping for a miracle against England The parallel between Panama – England's next opponents – and Costa Rica is a fairly obvious one. Both are Central American countries, both are small, and both are used to being underestimated on the football pitch.

But while Costa Rica are playing at their fifth World Cup, Panama are at their first, thanks to a dramatic, last-gasp strike in qualifying – against, you guessed it: Costa Rica.

After a controversial “ghost goal” from a scramble in the box saw them equalise, centre-back and team icon Roman Torres crashed in a header in the 88th minute to make the score 2-1. It was enough to send Panama to Russia, in place of the United States.

Having beaten Costa Rica to make it, Panama are now aiming to emulate their neighbours.

An opening 3-0 defeat by star-studded Belgium on Monday may have dampened their faint hopes of getting out of Group G, but a win or draw in their remaining games against England and Tunisia would be historic for the country of just 4m people.

After all, qualification in October was followed by an emergency decree from president Juan Carlos Varela declaring the next day a national holiday. Just imagine what an upset in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday against Gareth Southgate’s side would prompt.

“Costa Rica were underdogs in England’s group in 2014 but won the group,” Panama midfielder Anibal Godoy told magazine Four Four Two. “Nothing is impossible.”Roman Torres scored the goal to take Panama to the World Cup (Source: Getty)

Whether they like it or not, Panama have been cast as the plucky underdogs from the outset. Costa Rica beat Uruguay and Italy and drew 0-0 with England before getting past Greece on penalties to reach the quarter-finals in Brazil four years ago.

Panama’s aims may not be quite as high, but as president Varela recently said, football can help make the country known for more than just the hat, the canal and the Panama Papers scandal.

“The World Cup puts Panama on the map,” he told the Guardian. “The famous Papers was a very specific situation at a specific moment: there was a desire to define the country by that, when Panama is much more than that.”

Despite their 3-0 defeat in Sochi, Panama showed glimpses of their potential against Belgium.

Michael Amir Murillo, New York Red Bulls’ talented 22-year-old right-back, is fast and direct, and had by far their best chance. With opposite number Yannick Carrasco infield and fast asleep, Murillo got in behind Jan Vertonghen to test Thibaut Courtois.

Midfielder Edgar Joel Barcenas also impressed in bursts, showing an eye for a pass, as well as bite in the tackle. Although Panama showed flashes of creativity, it’s the second of Barcenas’s attributes that stood out across each of the 14 players used.

Against the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, it’s understandable to try to limit time and space on the ball. Panama took this to an extreme, with their physicality seeing them concede 18 fouls and pick up five yellow cards.

The use of fouls to break up play and stop quick counters may be cynical, but it was also effective. They successfully frustrated their opponents, up until Dries Mertens volleyed in a wonder-goal in the 47th minute.Michael Amir Murillo nearly scored for Panama against Belgium (Source: Getty)

“We are a very organised team, we play tactically and sometimes our players look a bit tough,” Panama coach Hernan Dario Gomez explained post-match. “We never have the intention to be tough, but they are strong men. We do not try to hurt anyone. We have good intentions.”

After Mertens’ opener, Belgium’s quality shone through as De Bruyne and Hazard produced high-quality passes for Lukaku to score twice in six minutes. In the heat and humidity of Sochi, Panama wilted, as Gomez admitted.

“I told them we played with dignity,” he said. “We are not as fit as the European players [but] we will keep growing and learning.”

If they are to avoid defeat by England, they will need to learn from the Belgium game, but also to stick to their game-plan.

Keeping shape in a rigid 4-5-1 formation, with holding midfielder Gabriel Gomez sitting in front of centre-backs Torres and Fidel Escobar, represents their best chance of keeping England’s fluid attack at bay.

Torres – at 99kg, officially the heaviest player at the tournament – and Escobar sat deep against Belgium. The MLS-based duo are in the bottom six for distance covered per 90 minutes at the World Cup; they will defend their 18-yard box and be desperate not to leave space in behind.

Between the dramatic moment of qualification on 11 October and their opening World Cup match, Panama went on a mini tour of Europe. The results suggest England should have far too much for them. While they beat Trinidad 1-0 in between, they failed to score in losses to Norway, Switzerland and Denmark and drew 0-0 with Northern Ireland.

To cause an upset against England they will need a moment similar to what Torres summoned against Costa Rica. Or as assistant manager Edgar Carvajal called it, “something handed down by God”.

Gene-Edited Pigs Resistant To Billion Dollar Virus

$

Scientists have produced pigs that can resist one of the world’s most costly animal diseases, by changing their genetic code.

Tests with the virus – called Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, or PRRS – found the pigs do not become infected at all.

The animals show no signs that the change in their DNA has had any other impact on their health or wellbeing.

PRRS costs the pig industry around $2.5 billion (£1.75bn) each year in lost revenue in the US and Europe alone.

The disease causes breathing problems and deaths in young animals and if pregnant sows become infected, it can cause them to lose their litter.

The virus infects pigs using a receptor on their cells’ surface called CD163. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute used gene editing techniques to remove a small section of the CD163 gene.

They focused on the section of the receptor that the virus attaches to, leaving the rest of the molecule intact.

The team collaborated with Genus PLC, a leading global animal genetics company, to produce pigs with the specific DNA change.

Previous studies had shown that cells from these animals were resistant to the virus in lab tests.

This is the first time researchers have exposed these pigs to the virus to see if they become infected.

They found that none of the animals became ill when exposed to the virus. Blood tests found no trace of the infection.

This research, co-funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and Genus PLC, is published in the Journal of Virology.

PRRS is endemic in most pig producing countries worldwide. Vaccines have mostly failed to stop the spread of the virus – which continues to evolve rapidly.

Other groups have used gene editing to create PRRS-resistant pigs by removing the whole CD163 receptor.

Removing only a section of CD163 allows the receptor to retain its ordinary function in the body and reduces the risk of side effects, the researchers say.

Dr Christine Tait-Burkard, of the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, said: “These results are exciting but it will still likely be several years before we’re eating bacon sandwiches from PRRS-resistant pigs.

“First and foremost we need broader public discussion on the acceptability of gene-edited meat entering our food chain, to help inform political leaders on how these techniques should be regulated.

“We also need to carry out longer term studies to confirm that these genetic changes do not have any unforeseen adverse effects on the animals.

“If these studies are successful and the public are accepting of this technology, we would then be looking to work with pig breeding companies to integrate these gene edits into commercial breeding stocks.”

Genetically modified animals are banned from the food chain in Europe. It is not clear what regulations would apply to gene-edited animals, however, as the approach is different.

GM techniques have been controversial because they can involve introducing genes of other species into an animal. In contrast, gene editing speeds up processes that could occur naturally through breeding over many generations, without introducing genes from other species.

Professor Alan Archibald said: “Gene editing gives us a powerful tool to help reduce losses in the farming industry while improving the health and welfare of the animals themselves.”

Jonathan Lightner, Chief Scientific Officer for Genus PLC said: “These results are very exciting and further underscore the potential, through gene editing, to provide incredible benefits to the global pork industry, and society as a whole, by improving animal health. We look forward to further collaboration with the University on this exciting project.”

The interdisciplinary research is the result of long term strategic investment from the BBSRC.

Jef Grainger, Associate Director of BBSRC Science Strategy, said: “This is an exciting result that demonstrates the potential for genome editing approaches to enable significant improvements to be made in the health and welfare of farmed animals, and reduce the economic impacts of diseases that are otherwise difficult to manage effectively.” Reported by Eurasia Review 1 hour ago.

Today, the Eurogroup commemorated its first meeting 20 years ago in Luxembourg.

Established by the EU leaders shortly before the introduction of the euro, the Eurogroup is an informal body where euro area countries’ finance ministers meet to discuss issues related to the single currency.

One of the greatest achievements of European integration, the euro has become a tangible part of the European identity. Since its inception it has grown both in membership and strength, enjoying the robust support of around 340 million people in 19 euro area countries. As the world’s second most-used currency, it reinforces Europe’s presence on the global scene. The euro has strengthened the internal market, providing an anchor for the economy: citizens and firms across Europe benefit from stable prices and conduct their business across national borders with unprecedented ease.

The Eurogroup’s commitment, helped the euro area to withstand the worst financial and economic crisis since the Great Depression. Lessons have been learnt: economic imbalances are better addressed, coordination was strengthened, and new common institutions were built to complement the monetary union and make it more resilient. European citizens never lost confidence in their currency; their currency does not fail them.

At present, with all euro area member states are experiencing economic growth and as new and more rewarding jobs being added, we need to ensure that these gains will be shared among ever more citizens.

To ensure that the Economic and Monetary Union is well equipped to handle future challenges and to improve convergence, the Eurogroup is determined to continue promoting the implementation of sound national policies and to further develop common policies and tools. These are – more than ever – matters of our shared interest in today’s rapidly evolving world.

The Eurogroup will pursue ambitious and forward-looking national and European policies that foster strong and equitable growth, investment and employment – delivering lasting prosperity for all.

The Eurogroup remains united in its unwavering political commitment to this common cause – the euro. Reported by Eurasia Review 20 minutes ago.

1Q 2018: LTE Market Share 76% and Penetration Exceeds 100% in North America – LTE Market Share 32% in Latin America & Caribbean

BELLEVUE, Wash., June 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LTE technology, the most widely used wireless cellular technology worldwide, achieved more than 38.5 percent market share in the first quarter of 2018 (1Q 2018) providing 4G wireless access to a large portion of the world’s population with 3.2 billion global connections. 5G Americas, the industry trade association and voice of 5G and LTE for the Americas, today announced LTE’s impressive momentum for 1Q 2018 in North America, Latin America and throughout the world according to data from Ovum.North America’s market share for LTE at 76 percent exceeds all other world regions; the next highest world regions are Oceania, Eastern and South Eastern Asia with LTE share of 59 percent followed by Western Europe at 46 percent. Latin America and the Caribbean had significant growth of LTE market share to 31.5 percent at the end of 1Q 2018.

“5G is on the horizon and will be built upon the most solid of foundations – LTE – which is the current workhorse for the industry and offers mobile broadband global coverage for many years to come,” stated Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas. “We are already hearing news of planned 5G deployments beginning later in 2018 and early 2019, however, LTE will continue to grow until 2022, when we will begin to see some substantial uptake in 5G connections.”

LTE is currently deployed on 597 networks worldwide of which 251 are LTE-Advanced (TeleGeography-GlobalComms Database). The global deployment success of LTE provides the basis for mobile broadband wireless coverage and roaming for the billions of LTE subscribers worldwide.

*1Q 2018 - North America*

LTE achieved 365 million connections and a penetration rate higher than 100 percent in March 2018 compared to the population of 364 million in the U.S and Canada. There will be no other region worldwide predicted to reach 100 percent penetration for LTE prior to the end of 2019. This penetration rate is forecast to rise to 131 percent in 2021 after which time new 5G connections will begin to impact LTE subscriptions and penetration rates. At the end of March 2018, the next highest world regions were: Oceania, Eastern and South Eastern Asia at 76 percent; Western Europe at 62 percent; and then a substantial drop to Eastern Europe at 37 percent, Middle East at 36 percent and Latin America & the Caribbean at 34 percent.

In addition to having a significantly higher penetration rate, the U.S. and Canada also have the highest market share for LTE in comparison to all mobile wireless technologies with 76 percent. Market share represents the percentage of mobile wireless connections that are LTE technology versus all other mobile wireless technologies.

· 365 million LTE connections at 1Q 2018; increase of 48 million annually or 15 percent growth
· LTE is forecast to reach 491 million connections at the end of 2021 (including M2M)
· 31 million 5G connections forecast in 2021 – the largest share of 5G connections in all the global regions

*1Q 2018 - Latin America and the Caribbean*

Jose Otero, Director of Latin America and the Caribbean for 5G Americas, summarized trends in the region, “LTE coverage continues to increase, reaching over 90% of the population in countries like Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay. Operators’ investment in the technology continues as LTE-A proliferates in the region and a higher penetration of Smartphone allows a greater number of individuals to have access to mobile broadband technologies. 5G trials continue to take place in the region with operators announcing the launch of the first 5G commercial network during the next 12 to 18 months.”

LTE’s market share increased from 29 percent to 32 percent from year-end 2017 through end of March 2018 and is forecast to be the most widely used cellular technology in the region by the end of 2019.

· 694 million total mobile wireless subscriptions
· 219 million LTE connections; 78 million added year-over-year from 1Q 2017 for 56 percent growth
· LTE is forecast to reach 258 million connections at the end of 2018 (forecast includes M2M)
· LTE will become the most popular cellular technology in 2019
· By the end of 2022, LTE is forecast to reach half a billion connections (forecast includes M2M)

*1Q 2018 - Global *

At the end of March 2018, global LTE connections reached 3.2 billion; LTE is forecast to achieve 4 billion connections in 2019 and pass 5 billion connections in 2021. This growth is phenomenal, more than doubling from 1.5 billion LTE connections in June 2016 in two years’ time to 3 billion. Also notable - LTE market share reached 38.5 percent at the end of March 2018 and will continue its aggressive rise over the coming years.

“Oceania, Eastern and Southeastern Asia region play a significant role in the global growth of LTE subscriptions, accounting for 41 percent of all LTE subscribers by 2022, compared to 32 percent of all cellular subscribers worldwide. And it’s interesting to note that, while LTE continues to see phenomenal growth surpassing 50 percent in 2020, 5G begins to make its inroads beginning by 2022, with some regions – particularly North America and Oceania, Eastern and Southeastern Asia – starting to see some LTE subscriber declines as a result,” explained Kristin Paulin, Senior Analyst at Ovum.

· 907 million new LTE subscriptions year-over-year from 1Q 2017
· LTE connections forecast to reach 5.6 billion by year-end 2022 (forecast includes M2M)
· LTE global market share forecast to reach 60 percent by year end 2022

Bext360 Powers Blockchain Traceability For Token, The First Community-Owned Coffee Brand From Moyee Coffee and FairChain Foundation

DENVER, June 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Bext360, a company that develops technologies to streamline critical supply chains in emerging economies, today announced that it is powering the blockchain traceability component for the new coffee brand Token, a collaboration between Moyee Coffee and FairChain Foundation. Token aims to become the world’s first truly end-to-end blockchain-enabled coffee, and is on a mission to cut out all middlemen, and directly link Western coffee drinkers with the communities that grow and roast their beans. In November 2017, Bext360, Moyee and the FairChain Foundation joined forces in disrupting the coffee industry by producing the world’s first blockchain-traced coffee by a European coffee brand. Since then, the program has sourced 60,000 kilograms of coffee from Ethiopia to Amsterdam, and has provided proof of living-wage payments made to the farmers, all traced and immutable within the blockchain by Bext360’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform, which provides a traceable fingerprint to track products from producer to consumer. The Fairchain Foundation provided confirmation data from the producers and farmers at the different points of collection —from origin, quality, to purchasers to payouts — all which were were recorded within the blockchain by Bext360.

Additionally, the blockchain ledger is designed to help keep down overhead costs—replacing paper carbon copies and other inefficient record-keeping methods—while making the financials easier to audit. For consumers, Bext360 provides unprecedented levels of transparency around origin and quality; and would allow, a coffee drinker in Europe to pull up this data and verify exactly where her coffee was sourced, who produced the coffee and how much the small coffee producer was paid. Now Moyee Coffee and the FairChain Foundation are delivering on its promise and is launching the first ever public blockchain system, showing who earns what in each step in the process through Token.

*How Token Works *
To make the benefits of blockchain more tangible to consumers, each bag of Token coffee comes with a token. Each token is worth 0.50 cents equaling the marketing budget per bag. Together with Krypc, a special blockchain platform is created where consumers can choose to invest the money in themselves and get a discount, in the Token company itself or in the farmers and families that produce their coffee. For first time ever, real value from an individual coffee lover can be transferred to the pocket of farmers without any interference from any brand or company.

The first batches of Token will premiere this summer at the European Coffee Federation and World of Coffee and De Parade. Before that, it will launch a limited edition of one hundred 250g packages of the brand on the Token website. Those first 100 owners of the ‘Tokens of appreciation’ will have the opportunity to fine-tune the coffee taste profile.

*About Bext360 *
Bext360 develops technologies that strengthen local businesses and communities in emerging economies by increasing access to capital and streamlining critical supply chains. Bext360’s platform revolutionizes supply chains with IoT, blockchain, machine vision and artificial intelligence, while bringing consumers and farming communities together to improve product quality, community livelihoods and the consumer experience. Bext360 technology builds upon the fundamental shift in mobile access, microfinance, and mobile/digital payments in developing countries. A guiding principle of Bext360 is to build community by enabling buyers and other organizations with direct paths to improve the quality of both the product and the communities that produce their goods, whether it is coffee, seafood, cotton, to palm oil.
