FORGET about the Rolling Stones at Glastonbury one area of Bristol is staging it very own festival in the final weekend of June.
Businesses and traders in the Old Market area of the city have decided to get together to put on their own event at the same time as the world famous festival.
The Old Market Traders' Association has been looking at ways of improving the area on the edge of the city centre.
The historic part of the city is known for its independent shops but also has a reputation for being rundown and neglected.
The traders are working to turn the area around and have organised a series of events which are timed to coincide with Europe's largest and best known music festival.
While Glastonbury has dozens of stages, bars and performance areas the Old Market festival is being held at 21 different venues.
The headline acts in Somerset might include the biggest names in the music world including The Arctic Monkeys and Mumford and Sons but people going to Old Market will not have to cope with the perennial mud and long queues to use over-flowing portable toilets.
And most important of all while it is virtually impossible to get a ticket for the sold-out event at Glastonbury the Old Market Festival is free for everyone who wants to come along and enjoy the event.
As well as bands and music there will also be events and displays focussing on the culture and heritage of the Old Market area – which is one of the oldest trading areas of the city.
A heritage exhibition is being held at the Hydra Books store and the Terrence Higgins Trust, which has been based in Old Market for three decades is also staging an exhibition.
There will be a free garden party at the Trinity Centre which will have a Glastonbury theme.
As well as music and cabaret there will be an exhibition with 40 years of pictures from the festival featuring some of the bands and acts that have appeared at Pilton down the years.
A spokesperson said: "After the success of many other community events Old Market Quarter has decided to launch its own festival.
"With a mix of diverse entertainment throughout the area and free entry to the music venues we have everything from live bands, art shows, Faux Glasto events to drag queens."
A heritage guide is also being launched in celebration of the area and everything it has to offer. Reported by This is 7 hours ago.
