Boyan's back This is Cornwall --

A WEST Cornwall blacksmith is the appropriate organiser of this year's visit to Cornwall by one of Europe's finest choirs.

Dan Harding, who runs the Pencarn Forge near Hayle, has arranged the visit of the Boyan Ensemble of Kiev, who will be performing a two-date tour of the Duchy.

And it is appropriate that Dan is the organiser as the choir, along with their usual spine-tingling mixture of sublime sacred music and foot-tapping folk songs, will also be performing the famous Anvil Chorus.

The Boyan's programme will include the popular Verdi piece and the "drinking song" from La Traviata to mark the composer's bicentenary year.

The ensemble's 26 members are drawn from Ukraine's top professional male choir, the Revutsky Academic Male Capella, based in the capital of Ukraine.

They are joined by a line-up of soloists including soprano Valentina Ivanenko, who will complement the bass voices for which the Boyan are renowned.

The ensemble is famous for the purity of its sound, delicately floated pianissimos and brilliant fortes.

The two concerts in Cornwall will be in Truro Cathedral on Saturday, September 28 at 7.30pm and Penzance Parish Church at 3pm on Sunday, September 29.

Truro tickets are £18 from the Hall for Cornwall Box Office: 01872 262466; Penzance tickets cost £15 from West Penwith Music 01736 364440; Penzance postal bookings from Dan Harding – 01736 741061. Reported by This is 2 hours ago.
