Manufacturing set to gain momentum from exports

This is Nottingham --

TRADE figures show an upward momentum in growth opening favourable prospects for the manufacturing sector says Richard Halstead, Midlands' region director of manufacturers' organisation EEF.

The trade gap nearly halved to £1.5bn, boosted by a surge in exports to countries outside the EU.

The UK's exports to Germany fell nine per cent but those to China reached a record level in June.

A weak Eurozone has held back British exports.

Mr Halstead said: "While trade figures can be volatile, the data are a further sign of upward momentum with growth continuing as we progress through the second half of the year.

"While exports to Europe have remained stable, exports grew to their highest level this month on the back of strength in sales to non-EU countries.

"Exports to countries beyond Europe exceeded £40bn for the first time. This supports our view that the manufacturing sector will gain momentum and be a source of growth for the UK economy." Reported by This is 6 hours ago.
