Ex-Gloucestershire head teacher arrested in Kenya in dramatic sting
This is Gloucestershire --

TEACHER David Throp has been cleared of all wrongdoing after a dramatic arrest in a sting operation by Kenyan police.

Mr Throp, who was headteacher at Whitecross School – now the Dean Academy – in Lydney for nine years, was hauled out of a Nairobi hotel room with two colleagues on suspicion of running an illegal recruitment racket.

The 62-year-old, who lives in Qatar where he is principal at the Cambridge School, a 1,900-pupil mixed international facility, was in Kenya to recruit teachers.

But he and his colleagues were accused of doing so illegally, without the correct working visas, and were arrested by officers posing as interested workers, while local television news crews waited outside.

He said: "Having applied for a visa to Kenya, stating clearly our business of recruiting and engaging the services of a recruitment agent there, we were truly amazed to be interrupted after two days of recruitment based in The Ritz hotel, Nairobi, and then held in custody for two days.

"Fortunately we were not ill-treated in any way and released.

"All allegations were found to be baseless and we were fully exonerated with a request to continue our activities in Kenya.

"We remained in Kenya for a further week or so, completing our interviews before returning to Doha."

This is how the initial incident was reported in Kenya:

After his ordeal in June, he said he would not be returning to the African country despite the fact they did recruit good teachers from there.

"We recruit teachers worldwide for the schools, UK, New Zealand, Australia, all of Europe, Asia, etc and will continue doing this," he said.

Mr Throp was head at Whitecross until 1999 before leaving for a school in Portsmouth. He has also taught in Kuwait.

One former Whitecross pupil, who was there during Mr Throp's tenure, said: "I was shocked to hear about it.

"He was always a top headteacher, very strict and professional, but he ran the school very well during his time in charge. I'm glad to see he has been found innocent." Reported by This is 7 hours ago.
