TECHNOLOGY: KC Lightstream has been named as a finalist in the Next Generation Digital Challenge Awards 2013.

The awards recognise the people, projects and organisations that are helping to develop the UK's digital economy and make a difference to people's lives, businesses and communities.

KC's roll-out of its "lightning-fast" fibre broadband service is the largest deployment of Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) technology in the UK, and one of just a handful of FTTP deployments across Europe.

The service offers download speeds including 350Mbps.

Fibre deployments in most other parts of the UK deliver slower speeds of up to 40Mbps, because the fibre is not installed all the way to customers' properties. Instead, it is laid to street cabinets and existing copper cables are used to complete the connection to customers' premises.

KC Lightstream has now been shortlisted in the Fixed Urban Networks category of the awards.

KC's engineering director, Andy Whale, said: "The widespread availability of superfast broadband is vital if the UK is to realise the full value of the digital economy.

"Our decision to invest in Fibre To The Premises is an ambitious one that will give our customers the best connected homes and businesses in the UK. Because the technology is future-proof, we'll be able to offer even faster speeds as people live increasingly connected lives, both at home and at work."

KC Lightstream is available to more than 20,000 homes and businesses in Hull and East Yorkshire and has more than 4,000 customers.

Last year, the service won the Hull Daily Mail Business Award for Innovation and Technology.

MS3, which is headquartered in Hessle, is also in the running for the same award.

An initial investment of £4.5m has enabled the fibre network operator to finish the first phase of its network build, which stretches 33km across Hull and East Yorkshire.

Next Generation Digital Challenge Award winners will be announced on 14 October. Reported by This is 5 hours ago.
