Europe's calling Canterbury Hockey Club This is Kent --

EUROPE is calling Canterbury Hockey Club.

The men's first team secured their place in the Premier Division's end-of-season play-offs thanks to a hard-fought 3-2 win away at Cannock on Saturday.

It has been an up and down season for the city side, having led the standings early on in the campaign, only to fall away following a run of six defeats in seven games between November and February.

Their participation in the play-offs was in doubt right up until the final day of the season, with only victory over Cannock ensuring a finish in the top four.

Victory in the play-off semi-final against Surbiton, a team who only finished two points ahead of them in the final league standings, would ensure them a place in European competition next season.

Player-coach Kwan Browne is looking forward to the big clash with Surbiton, insisting it is a great opportunity for the club to shine.

He said: "We will not get a better opportunity than this to get into Europe. Games with Surbiton have always been close since I've been here and if we beat them we will be in Europe next season, which is unbelievable for this club.

"There's another chance if we don't beat them, but we really want to take this opportunity."

Saturday's game with Cannock was always on a knife-edge, with the home side also in with a shout of qualifying for the play-offs if they had picked up victory.

As it was though, Canterbury got all three points to claim their place in the top four, with the final position not quite cemented as East Grinstead have to play Southgate still, albeit needing to win by 13 goals to make it into the play-offs.

And while Browne's focus is solely on Surbiton, he does not fear anyone in the play-offs.

He added: "We have 13 guys here that we believe can go and win the play-offs.

"It will be quite tough but looking at some of the other teams' form going into it, they've all been dropping points and all of the games are becoming quite close. Anything can happen." Reported by This is 3 hours ago.
