International choirs heading to Fowey in May
This is Cornwall --

FOWEY looks set to become the place to be in May as the town plays host to two international festivals.

The new-look Fowey Festival of Words and Music and its cast of eclectic music, celebrity guests and dazzling shows launches on May 8, while it has also now been announced that the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival will be performing in the town on May 5.

The Choral Festival has attracted choirs from across the globe to come to Cornwall for five glorious song-filled days over the May Bank Holiday, with one now scheduled to herald the run-up to Fowey's own major cultural event.

Peter Davies, choral festival director, said: "The Fowey festival and our own choral festival have both grown out of all recognition since their early beginnings, and since we host concerts right across Cornwall from May 2 to 6 it seems absolutely right that we celebrate with Fowey at this very special time of year."

The choral festival will see over 60 choirs converge on Cornwall in the largest event of its kind in Europe.

The event, on May 5, will take place at Fowey Parish Church and feature the male voice choirs from Peterborough, Tamar Valley and Gledholt in Yorkshire.

The performance is being seen as a prelude to the opening of the Fowey Festival.

The acts for the festival itself have now been finalised, the programme printed and the tickets have gone on public sale.

As in previous years, when it was known as 'The du Maurier Festival', festival go-oers will be treated to a wide variety of acts, talks and shows, from performers including Ruthie Henshall and Michael Morpurgo.

Jonathan Aberdeen, director of The Fowey Festival of Words and Music, is anticipating another successful cultural event.

"Since 1997 Fowey has enjoyed the reputation of hosting one of the UK's most popular festivals of its kind," he said, "The mix of music, comedy, literature, guided walks, talks and community events has always proved to be popular. The festival has a wonderfully relaxed and informal atmosphere to it."

Information on all acts, tickets and booking are on the new festival website www.foweyfestival.com
