Crawley amputee 'won't be able to eat' if benefits are cut

This is Sussex --

AN amputee says he will have to choose between paying his bills and eating when his housing benefit is cut because he has a spare room.

Trevor Bryant has been trying to downsize his three-bedroom house for nearly four years but there are no smaller houses available for him to move into.

Housing benefit is to be cut by £14 a week for anyone deemed to have a spare room in their council or housing association home.

When the so-called "bedroom tax" is brought in on April 1 it will mean Mr Bryant and his full-time carer and wife Shirley will have "less than £20 a week" to live on.

Mr Bryant suffers from a rare bone disease which forced him to quit work in 2006 and resulted in the loss of his right leg.

His home has been adapted with a stair lift, wet room and lowered garden for about £30,000.

The 55-year-old, of Finsbury Close, Broadfield, said: "Disabled people shouldn't be attacked. I was declared unemployable in 2006 after 30 years driving HGVs and coaches all over Europe.

"It's not just the bone disorder, I have lots of health problems and now I have this to worry about.

"We've been trying to downsize for years but there just isn't the stock available. What am I meant to do?

"I have to pay my bills or I get evicted so do I starve to death instead?"

Mr Bryant estimates he has accumulated about £16,500 of debt just to pay his bills and make sure he can eat.

He had to sell his tools to cover an electricity bill this winter and can only afford to have the heating on for two hours a day.

Mr Bryant said: "If I am charged another £14 a week, that will push me below the minimum amount the Government recommends you can live on.

"I am willing to downsize but there is nowhere for me to move to. I don't think this has been properly considered at all." Reported by This is 2 hours ago.
