A charity fundraiser from Bath who is in training for a 3,000-mile challenge across Europe faces a major setback after his £6,000 bike was stolen.
Former racing driver Alex Waters is preparing to take part in the Race Across Europe in August, to raise money for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent.
It is a cause close to his heart because the 25-year-old ex-King Edward's School pupil battled skin cancer as a teenager.
However his training has now been halted after thieves smashed their way into the locked garden shed in Bear Flat where it was being stored, and stole it.
Mr Waters said: "It is just unbelievable and so frustrating because the bike hasn't been used that much over the past year and I had only just got it out to start my training.
"Now it is gone, I don't have a bike to train on."
It is not clear if the thieves knew about the expensive bike and had targeted the shed because of it, or if it was a random break-in.
This is not the first time Mr Waters has been the victim of this type of theft, as when he was 14 and dreaming of a racing career his go-cart was stolen.
However that incident had a happy outcome, when an appeal in The Chronicle led to tip-offs from local people and the specialist cart was returned.
The stolen bike is a Scott Spark cross country model, which is black, red and white.
