ENGINEERING: The UK needs to do more to encourage women into engineering according to BAE Systems' engineering director Simon Howison.

He says the UK is trailing the rest of Europe when it comes to attracting women into the sector speaking ahead of International Women's Day today.

Mr Howison said: "Only 8.7 per cent of professional engineers are women, meaning the UK has the lowest proportion in Europe.

"My concern is that, because in the UK it is largely seen as a male activity, there are huge numbers of girls who could have had successful careers as engineers who never give it a thought."

FINANCE: Hull chartered accountants MWS Business Management Limited are urging the region's employers to act now to avoid being caught out by the biggest change to the PAYE system for almost 70 years.

The introduction next month of new demands by HMRC – known as Real Time Information or RTI – will require businesses to submit fresh information whenever employees are paid.

The package of changes also requires businesses to report any reduction in the amount they pay to HMRC and to advise if they have not paid any employees during a pay period.

Mike Gibbin, associate director of MWS, said many employers may be unaware of how much work is required, and how soon.

He said: "This is a radical change to the way in which HMRC gathers information from employers."
