Blue plaque tribute to role slipway played in D-Day This is Devon --

A BLUE plaque is to be put up on Brixham's listed slipway to commemorate its importance in the D-Day landings.

Brixham Town Council agreed to spend £900 on the commemorative plaque.

The Grade II listed slipway and hard on Brixham Outer Harbour was a four-berth landing ship tank slipway and embarkation area during the Second World War.

It was erected in 1943 in the lee of an existing breakwater as part of Operation Overlord, the springboard for the Allied invasion of German-occupied western Europe.

The hard was one of 68 purpose-built structures constructed along the southern shores of England and Wales.

The Brixham hard was heavily used in the period immediately before the invasion and during the subsequent three weeks.

It was de-requisitioned on February 27, 1945.

At the end of the war the associated jetties were removed and the concrete hard and slipway retained for commercial and leisure use.

Addressing Brixham Town Council, Robbie Robinson, who has been instrumental in having the structure listed, said it was important to put the plaque up as a memorial marker and because of the important role these war defences had played.

He said it was an iconic reminder of D-Day and the part played by both local communities and the American military.

Cllr Martyn Hodge said: "It is important we should support this idea. It is a bit of history. Mr Robinson has done so much work on this.

"I feel we should support this Blue Plaque."

Cllr Lynne Armstrong said the council not only should support the blue plaque, but pay for it too.

The Blue Plaque was adopted unanimously. Reported by This is 1 hour ago.
