Wyndham Evans remembers European adventures of old for the Swans This is South Wales --

THE club that nearly fell off a football cliff 10 years ago is today on cloud nine — and has mainland Europe firmly in its sights.

Trophy-winning Swansea City FC travel to the continent for next season's Europa League purely on merit. What a journey!

One former Swans player to experience the European adventure is Wyndham Evans.

He recalled Paris Saint-Germain players sampling a spot of post-match vino at the Vetch bar — and a memorable trip to East Germany.

The Llanelli-born defender represented a Swans side which qualified for Europe by winning the Welsh Cup.

"It is such a prestigious thing," said the 61-year-old, who had two stints at the Swans between 1971 and 1985. "But it was far easier in those days to qualify. We found it okay in Europe. We were never overrun. But it is a totally different feeling.

"Paris Saint-Germain were the best team.

"The French players were having a drink after the game at the Vetch. They had a different style of clothes, and were drinking wine."

He added: "We flew to Locomotiv Leipzig in what was then East Germany. You had to be careful and watch your p's and q's."

Evans, a Wales international, said the away trips fostered a great feeling within the squad.

He reckoned the current team would thrive overseas. "Swansea would be capable of going a long way in the competition," he said.

Ten years ago it was do or die against Hull City. In 2011 the Swans returned to the top flight. Next year there is a place in the Europa League final up for grabs.

For the football romantics among you, the final is at Juventus Stadium in Turin.

Why not? Fulham managed it three years ago.
