Nottingham Roller Girls prepare for Europe's biggest roller derby tournament This is Nottingham -- Roller derby team, Nottingham Roller Girls, are playing their first game of a year long tournament this Saturday. The Heartlands Series, Europe's biggest interleague women's flat track roller derby tournament, sees 24 leagues from England and Wales come together in double header games throughout 2014. This will culminate in a two day playoff in November. Roller derby is currently the fastest growing sport in the UK. Games (or bouts) consist of two teams of four 'blockers' and one 'jammer' all on quad skates. Jammers have to break through the opposing pack of blockers as many times as possible throughout each two minute 'jams' in order to score points. The 'double header' bout will see Nottingham Roller Girls take on Oxford Roller Derby. "We're really excited to be part of the Heartlands series and show Europe what Nottingham skaters are made of", says Ruth Carter, Nottingham Roller Girls' chairperson. "Our team have been in serious training for this event, and we think we're in with a strong chance of winning. "You don't have to know anything about the sport to come down and watch, but we promise you'll want to know everything about roller derby by the end of the bout". The event will be held at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre at Nottingham Trent University's Clifton Campus from 12.30pm until 5.00pm. There will be an afterparty - at which the audience can meet the teams - in the Point bar. Find out more at nottinghamrollergirls.co.uk. Reported by This is 11 hours ago.
