This is Plymouth -- A PAIR of students at Duchy College are planning to take their skills back home to Eastern Europe. Zuzana Skopalova from Slovakia and Krisztine Majtan from Romania are both studying on the Spearhead Academy, a unique "learning and earning" partnership at Stoke Climsland. The two-year programme allows students to gain high quality training in practical skills such as agricultural sciences and management, working with modern technology to aid profitable and sustainable food production in Europe. Zuzana said: "I've really enjoyed this course, because I have been learning new things and meeting new people. I was studying at veterinary school in Slovakia and this opportunity came up and I'm really pleased I took it. We have been studying animal care, machinery repairs and welding. This has been a great experience because here they use modern techniques, modern equipment and I love the countryside here, but I don't like the weather." Luminita added: "We have a lot of practice on the course, which is great and a really good way to learn. he farming here is different, it is more modern, there are new techniques, but working in Europe the new machinery is now starting to arrive and when I spent two months working for Spearhead over the summer, I got the opportunity to try some of the newer machinery." Roger Clark, agriculture work-based learning course manager, explained: "The course is unique because of the partnership with Spearhead International and the reaction from the students studying the first year has been really pleasing, they haven't missed a day. This course provides real employability and skills which are transferred into the work place. When the students' progress onto their apprenticeship we will continue to support them and assess them and they will come out of this one hundred per cent employable."
