Are people in Derby really happier than Nottingham folk? This is Nottingham --

Nottingham residents have questioned a survey that suggests they are down in the dumps.

Nottingham was ranked a mere 28th out of 40 cities in a happiness survey – despite boasting a successful music, sports and shopping scene.

Even worse, rival East Midlands city Derby was ranked third.

Speaking to the Post yesterday cheerful residents were in disbelief at the rankings – drawn from tourism firm Jetpac's analysis of millions of pictures posted on online photo-sharing service Instagram.

Ronald Coates, 81, who lives near the Arboretum, said: "I can't believe Nottingham only came 28th. They must have got their figures wrong. It's an absolutely fantastic place.

"There is no reason to grumble because there is something here for everyone and our shops are the best and cheapest in the area."

He added: "I can't believe Derby, of all places, came out better than Nottingham – it's got nothing in it."

Jetpac created the table of happiness, which ranks Belfast first, followed by Bournemouth and then Derby, using software that can analyse people's faces in photos that have been publicly shared on the internet.

The software detected whether the people were smiling or not and could measure the size of their grin. The firm was then able to come up with a smile score for each city. Nottingham had 24.91, with the most unhappy city Salford, in Greater Manchester, scoring just 17.90.

Despite the result, the people of Nottingham believed they had plenty to be cheerful about, including a 16 per cent drop in unemployment and a world-renowned music scene, which has seen Clifton lad Jake Bugg top the charts as well as new kid on the block St Raymond signed to major record label Asylum.

Nottingham also has an enviable sporting scene, with seven winter Olympians representing the county at the Winter Olympics in Sochi next month, as well as Nottingham Forest pushing for promotion and reigning super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

In October last year, Nottingham won a prestigious European award for being friendly to foreigners at home and abroad. The Council of Europe had picked only seven other places on the continent to receive its Plaque of Honour.

Accounting student Ashley Okerenta, 21, in his final year at Nottingham Trent University, said: "I am really going to miss Nottingham when I finish university.

"I think this city is a fantastic place to live, not just for the shops but the people, too. If you smile at someone then they will smile back.

"And everyone says thank you when they get off the bus – it is a happy and cheerful place."

Nottingham Business Improvement District director Nicola Tidy, said: "Nottingham has lots of reasons to be happy. We have lots of great shops and we boast more bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants per square mile than any other city in Europe. Last year, the city also secured Purple Flag status for the fourth year running."
