Performance Mini spotted testing in Europe, 220bhp expected and a top speed of more than 150mph

The first prototype of the new Mini John Cooper Works has been spotted winter testing in Europe.

These pictures show an early engineering mule testing in Scandinavia, and while it is heavily camouflaged we can see it keeps roughly the same shape as the concept revealed at the Detroit motor show.

Company officials have told Autocar that the John Cooper Works concept showed an almost production-ready car, save for some of the more extreme elements of its styling, like the front spoiler and large rear wing. Mini boss Jochen Goller promised “more power, less weight and greater dynamism” than the current car, so expect around 220bhp, a top speed of more than 150mph and 0-62mph in less than 6.5sec.

Large performance brakes can be seen on this model, as well as a more aggressively styled front bumper and large air intakes at the side. This test mule appears to have a standard Cooper S rear, suggesting Mini isn't yet ready to test the revised rear bumper for the JCW version.

The new car is likely to use a tuned version of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine found in the Cooper S. It sits on 18-inch alloy wheels, and is both longer and wider than the old model. The John Cooper Works variant is based on the third-generation Mini hatchback. Reported by Autocar 1 hour ago.
