Over 1,000 new coal fired stations planned

This is Plymouth --

WE are told that Europe, and we in the UK must reduce our CO2 emissions or the world as we know it will end.

Globally Europe accounts for around 12 per cent of emissions and here in the UK, less than two per cent

The UK could become totally carbon neutral and China alone would make up our emissions in less than one year.

That is not to say we shouldn't try, but the onus is on other, industrialising countries to get their act together as well, or our efforts are basically a waste of time.

The prominent World Resources Institute paint a picture of a massive 1,231 new coal fired power stations currently proposed worldwide.

This is not as part of those being constructed currently, but over and above those.

The major users are India with 100 more planned than China, followed by the USA with 79 more in the pipeline and heavy coal demand building up in Russia, Vietnam, Turkey and South Africa.

The EU wants to invite Turkey to join soon so it remains to be seen if they will allow this in light of their current targets. Will power over Turkey's economy override emissions I wonder?

The WRI assessment appears to be the most exhaustive compilation to date of coal plants in the global pipeline.

Meanwhile we abide by EU regulations on closing our own coal fired stations on the orders of the EU, whilst the rest of the world seemingly ignores any signs of global warming.

We must do what we can by insulating our homes and the like, but we must decide for ourselves whether or not we will abide by the EU bureaucrat's wishes or protect our pensioners and low paid

from Winter's wrath. Our existing power stations must remain online for the foreseeable future as wind farms and the like will do nothing to assist in this as they are inefficient, wasteful, very expensive and don't work.

Our own power security must lie in nuclear, Thorium or normal in the long term, backed up by our existing resources until new stations come on line.
