Nicola Mendelsohn | MediaGuardian 100 2013

The ex-advertising executive wields even more influence in her new role leading Facebook in Europe and other growing markets

*Job: *vice-president, Facebook, Europe, Middle East and Africa
*Age: *42
*Industry: *digital media
*New entry*

Former advertising executive Nicola Mendelsohn succeeded Joanna Shields as the new head of Facebook in Europe, the Middle East and Africa earlier this year.

Mendelsohn brought with her not just her impeccable knowledge of the ad industry – which Facebook is naturally keen to woo – but political contacts too.

Co-chair of the government's UK creative industries council (with Vince Cable and Maria Miller) her husband is the newly-ennobled Jon Mendelsohn.

Mendelsohn describes herself as a "proper northern lass". A former president of the advertisers' body, the IPA, Mendelsohn worked at BBH, Grey London and, finally, Karmarama.

"She will be hugely influential in her new role," said our panel.

Shields quit Facebook to head Tech City, the government's effort to promote east London as a technology hub. Mendelsohn is not as high as Shields was last year because of the presence in our top 10 of Facebook chief operating officer – and the woman who appointed her – Sheryl Sandberg.
