This is Scunthorpe --
THE owners of the Can-Pack UK canning factory in Scunthorpe have announced a bumper £10 million-plus investment to boost production and create 60 new jobs.
A second production line capable of making 650 million cans a year is due to start operation at the plant on the town's Skippingdale Industrial Estate during the first quarter of 2014.
Managing director Philip Fisher, 38, said: "The investment by the Can-Pack Group is a real vote of confidence in the UK operation and the team here in Scunthorpe.
"This expansion will cement the future of CPUK and the future looks bright".
Recruitment for staff to man the second production line has begun with an initial offer of 27 jobs.
Mr Fisher said: "We have been satisfied with the response for far".
Last year the Scunthorpe plant which currently employs 160-staff on an round the clock basis reported a turnover of £65 million.
The MD added: "Can Pack Group has decided that the market conditions are favourable and now is the right time to increase the capacity in the UK plant."
As well as the second line, the company is also seeking planning approval to build a water tank and pump house on the site with a view to starting the work in the last quarter of 2013.
Polish bosses have declined to reveal the scale of investment in Scunthorpe, but in 2010 the cost of installing a second production line alone was reported to be £10 million-plus.
Currently the Skippingdale factory produces 950 million cans a year to supply major breweries and brands across the UK and Europe.
The company has announced in future the capacity on the second production line will be extended to one billion cans a year in order to keep up with the growing demand for products.
The boost comes five years after the owners made a £40million investment on making Scunthorpe the base for their UK operations, in preference to Rotherham.
In 2010 Mr Fisher revealed one in 10 of all beer cans sold in the UK were made in the town and 20 per cent of the products were being exported to countries like Germany, Holland and Belgium.
At that time Can-Pack was in fourth place in the UK canning league, behind the leaders Rexam.
In 2010 the Scunthorpe plant won a multi-million pound contract to supply cans for Europe's biggest brewers Heineken for some of its leading brands.
InBev and Carlsberg are also major customers. Reported by This is 14 hours ago.
