This is Derbyshire --
CHIMNEY sweeps from across Europe and the United States have come together for their annual conference – in an industrial unit in Ripley.
Fifty-five delegates from the European Federation of Chimney Sweeps are currently in the town, the first time they have come to the UK.
The sweeps, who have travelled from the USA, Serbia, Switzerland, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Romania, among others, are being hosted by the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps.
The tradesmen will be talking about various factors affecting the industry, the importance of public safety and new equipment.
Lawson Wight, spokesman for the guild, said: "One of the things that we will be looking at this year in particular is the issue of soot. It has recently been designated as a hazardous material and we will be discussing what this will mean for us.
"While it is in the chimney, it is not harmful to the homeowners, as it will not get into the house.
"It is more the removal and disposal of it that it affects us."
The meeting is being held in the UK for the first time after the guild was given a place at the European Federation last year.
As an introduction, the 240-member strong organisation was invited to host the conference.
The event is taking place at the Sure Fire Technical Services centre on Heage Road Industrial Estate, where guild members undertake their training.
Mr Wight said: "We were struggling to find a venue that would accommodate the conference and the trade fair that we hold.
"It just so happened that the industrial unit next door to Sure Fire was empty."
It was decided that the it would be ideal place and the delegates made their way to Derbyshire.
Mr Wight said: "We held our annual general meeting on Tuesday, the trade show started on Wednesday and yesterday and today the conference is held.
"We are also taking the delegates clay pigeon shooting and on Sunday we are making the trip up to Chatsworth, which I am excited about as I've never been there either."
Chimney sweeping is on the rise with the increasing popularity of wood burning stoves and biomass heating systems.
Mr Wight said: "As more and more people return to solid fuel systems, more sweeps will be needed.
"At the trade show we have had a 75% increase in the number of stall holders." Reported by This is 7 hours ago.
