• Swede makes history but USA show spirit
• Europe pegged back in thrilling foursomes

Sweden's Anna Nordqvist made history on the second morning of the Solheim Cup but Europe were unable to enjoy it too much as the USA closed to within a point of the lead in Colorado in a thrilling foursomes session.

The 26-year-old Nordqvist teed off on the 17th hole alongside Caroline Hedwall, with the duo one up against Morgan Pressel and Jessica Korda. She promptly drained the first hole-in-one in the history of the tournament to put Europe 6-3 up overall, but with Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer taking a nailbiter for the home side, and Michelle Wie holding her nerve to take another match, that soon became 6-5.

It was left to Catriona Matthew to land a nervy final-hole putt to share a point with Brittany Lincicome and Lizette Salas and keep Europe just ahead.

Nordqvist's story was the headline, especially after she and Hedwall had been a shot down with five to play before their late brilliance.

It had appeared as though their performance had echoed down to Azahara Muñoz and Karine Icher too, with the duo pegging back Lewis and Creamer having trailed by four as the started the 11th. They levelled going into the last but carded a horror six on the par four and watched their rivals take the match with a birdie three. Matthew, playing with Caroline Masson, kept Europe ahead.

In the afternoon fourballs contest Europe seeemed to have the edge, ahead in two matches and all-square in two as the players approached the final five holes. Reported by guardian.co.uk 11 hours ago.
