This is Devon --
AS AN individual who came from a wartime, basic, working class, council estate in South London, and through hard work from the age of 15, together with effort and enterprise, might now be considered "middle class", I have finally joined a political party.
Over 40 years, by tactical voting, I have sought to influence the Conservatives, Labour and Lib Dems, and was even present in the Guildhall when the SDP party first outlined its policies and problems in the early 80s. However, despite my reservations about each and every mainstream party, and I include the Lib Dems/SDP in this, I have never felt that any of them truly reflected my personal views and ambitions.
Recently we have had masses of press reportage about a Euro MP from UKIP, who condemned the waste, and continuing lack of accountability, for over £1 billion a month going to "Bongo Bongo Land" countries. Most national press highlighted the fact that Nigeria, which receives billions from the UK and Europe, is actually spending it on space development programmes. Their ambition is to become the premier African country involved in space exploration.
At the same time, their population is starving, infant deaths are at the highest level ever, and the main population are living in abject misery.
UKIP have always criticised wasteful, and irrelevant expenditure of UK public finances by unaccountable European and Foreign governments. This episode, and the subsequent reinforcement of UKIP policies has led me to finally join a political party, which I believe reflects the views and opinions of moderate Englanders like me, who are not racist.
We are fed up with successive governments bending their knee to the liberal Left, and alienating the vast majority of British people who have worked for their country, supported and defended it at times of crisis, and valued the personal liberties and freedoms of speech, that have been an endemic part of our society. I am now a UKIP member and proud of it.
