This is Somerset --

Experienced tutor Lauretta Bloomer has joined the team at Jackdaws Music Trust. based at Great Elm, and will lead a weekend at Jackdaws, entitled Playing with Poise, from Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29.

Lauretta studied piano with Yonty Solomon at the Royal College of Music in London and later in Vienna at the Hochschule für Muziek with Georg Ebert and Heinz Medjimorec where she was able to develop her knowledge and love for the music of the Viennese Schools and to specialise in chamber music.

As soloist, chamber musician, and vocal accompanist, Lauretta has played concerts throughout Europe, toured the US and more recently performed in Asia and Australia.

Lauretta has been invited as a guest at many international music festivals and has a broad repertoire encompassing all periods and styles.

She is equally at home playing on period instruments of performing contemporary music.

Recent concerts and recordings include the complete songs of Clara Schumann, Pierrot Lunaire, Vaughan Williams' Piano Quintet, Mendelssohn's Piano Sextet and Quartets as well as works by Brett Dean, Kerry Turner, Luciano Berio and George Benjamin.

Besides her own teaching in Amsterdam, she has given lecture recitals in the UK and Europe, and has given master classes in the United States in chamber music and piano accompaniment.

Playing with Poise is a piano course open to all who love playing the piano or those who are curious and would like to know more about it.

Lauretta said: "We will work on fingering, correct use of the thumb, pedalling and posture, as well as tone production.

"The course will be divided into two parts with individual tuition and group participation, during which aspects of technique and musical interpretation will be covered.

"Participants will be encouraged to take turns to play pieces they are working on or would like to improve."

In a fun, relaxed and warmhearted atmosphere it is hoped that everyone will be inspired to take part and to learn from each other.

The course is open to all levels of pianists, please contact Jackdaws for further information or book online www.jackdaws.org.uk

There are still opportunities for young musicians to take advantage of a series of free workshops at the trust.

A spokesperson said: "Come along to Jackdaws this summer and learn the art of Music & Song Composition with Will Carslake or improve your String Playing with Elizabeth Turnbull.

"Places are available on each course for young musicians of any ability, aged nine to 15.

"The Workshop for Strings (violin, viola and cello) is on Thursday, August 13 and will be taken by Elizabeth Turnbull.

"Bring your string instrument and any music that you'd like to work on, or just come and play."

Elizabeth was born in New Zealand and was awarded a scholarship to further her studies in London.

She was principal viola in the London Mozart Players and a founder member of The Roth Quartet and later the Archaeus Quartet with whom she has travelled widely throughout Britain, Europe, and the USA.

Although chamber music has always been her greatest love, Elizabeth has done a considerable amount of performing as a recitalist.

Teaching has always been a particular interest and she was Head of String Faculty at Trinity College, London.

She has given numerous classes and workshops in the British Music conservatoires, Europe and New Zealand.

Will Carslake takes the helm on Thursday, August 22, leading a day of composing for any instrument, style or voice.

Will recently worked with pupils from local schools on the Britten inspired project Song Story.

Young musicians can take any instrument or their voice and "plenty of imagination".

Will is a composer and conductor.

He composes music that captures the northernness and wildness of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Recently, he has spent time in Canada having been awarded a composing residency in Banff.

His conducting work includes assisting at the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London.

All abilities are welcome and places must be booked in advance.

The workshops run from 11am to 2pm, and participants should take a packed lunch.

Bookings are welcome for those wishing to attend both days, too!
