This is Derbyshire --
JUST a few weeks ago everything seemed to be pointing to a ban on wild animals in circuses being within reach. Now that has now been put under threat.
The select committee charged with scrutinising the proposed ban advised the Government that it believes that "not one single wild animal should be saved from circuses in England". If it gets its way, wild animals might perform in circuses for years to come.
The report advised that only big cats and elephants should be saved from circus suffering but, as there are no big cats or elephants in circuses, it would be meaningless. Other wild animals will suffer and it will mean that they will continue to do so.
It would also allow for other animal acts from Europe being brought over.
There is no difference in the suffering of a lion or elephant to that of a zebra or monkey. All suffer the same when condemned to a life or existence in a circus.
The Captive Animals Protection Society is keeping up action by providing materials and demonstrations to show that the circus is no place for any animal. Visit its website, www.captiveanimals.org, telephone 0845 330 3911.
