Here come the girls This is South Wales --

THE UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship scored some big names for its Swansea city centre launch.

Wales men's team manager Chris Coleman and women's under-19 squad stars Alice Evans and Shanelle Edwards helped kick off the tournament on Saturday, offering people a chance to meet their sporting heroes.

Chris Coleman said: "The tournament is going to raise the profile of the sport a great deal, and I know how much everyone's worked towards this.

"It's a huge tournament and a really big deal.

"Something like this, I would imagine, will have girls in particular who are toying with the idea of the sport already to find out more.

"Hopefully we will see an increase in the number of girls playing in Wales."

Shanelle and Alice, who are waiting to hear if they have been selected for the tournament's squad, were also on hand to give their experiences of playing at national level. Shanelle said: "We're really excited about the tournament, but I'm really anxious to find out who is in the squad.

"There are some girls who are looking to go up to the senior squad, and getting the chance for an experience to play at this level is a great experience."

The tournament, featuring some of the best women's teams across Europe, will take place over two weeks starting Monday, August 19. The games will be hosted by Parc y Scarlets and Stebonheath Park in Llanelli, Richmond Park in Carmarthen, and Bridge Meadow Stadium in Haverfordwest.

All games until the semi-finals are free entry for the group matches, and will be £3 (£1 concessions) for the semi-final and final. Reported by This is 3 hours ago.
