Rise in taxpayer subsidy for Baths

This is Scunthorpe --

THE subsidy from taxpayers towards the cost of running the Scunthorpe Baths Hall this year has risen by more than £10,500, it has been revealed.

Under the Freedom of Information Act the Scunthorpe Telegraph learned the American-owned operators at SMG Europe are being paid £430,560.

The increase, due to inflation, is £10,560 above the fixed price arrangement for 2012-13 of £420,000.

The Telegraph was also told a 15-year contract between the Baths Hall's owners, North Lincolnshire Council, and SMG is a fixed price arrangement and does not make any provision for profit or loss.

Previously it was believed council tax payers would share any profits at the Doncaster Road venue which cost £15.4m to rebuild.

Last December council leader Liz Redfern said: "I am informed over a certain threshold a share of income is returned to the council".

SMG bosses have so far declined to reveal whether the 1,200-seater venue is running at a profit or a loss since opening in November 2011.

The rebuilding of the Baths was commissioned by the then ruling Labour group, now in opposition on the council, but was opposed by the Conservatives.

Since the Tory group took power, leaders said they were committed to ensuring local tax-payers got full value for their funding.

The Baths Hall declined to comment. Reported by This is 4 hours ago.
