Airline chief says 'we are ready to defeat strikers'

AN airline at East Midlands Airport reassured its passengers that it would continue to operate flights this summer despite the prospect of more strikes in Europe by air traffic controllers.

Last week, travellers at the Castle Donington airport experienced disruption and flight cancellations because of a strike by French air traffic controllers.

Ten flights to European destinations were cancelled, along with their corresponding inbound flights. Six flights due to fly into French airspace were also delayed.

The air traffic controllers were protesting against EU plans to create a single European airspace and more action is expected over the summer.

Jet2, which operates several routes to Europe, said none of its East Midlands flights were cancelled, although they were delayed.

The airline said it had a plan to make sure its flights took off and that it would use the same strategy again in the event of future disruption caused by strikes.

Chief executive Steve Heapy said: ""Careful crew, route and aircraft allocation mean that we do everything we can to mitigate disruption, ensuring our passengers arrive at their destinations with as little delay as possible. We don't cancel, we plan ahead. We're ready to take on the strikers this summer and win." Reported by This is 11 hours ago.
