Happy to give birth in UK despite low ranking

This is Grimsby --

WOMEN who gave birth at Grimsby's maternity unit have rubbished negative reports about becoming a mother in the UK.

A national report released this week failed to rank the UK in the top 20 places to be a mum.

In a list of 176 countries, compiled by the charity Save The Children, the UK is ranked at number 23.

Finland, Sweden and Norway take the top three slots respectively in the charity's Mother's Index.

Save The Children found the Democratic Republic of Congo to be the world's toughest place to be a mother.

But despite these findings, we can reveal that women giving birth in Grimsby are more than happy.

Chloe Cass, 25, travelled from London with her partner Oliver Konan, 37, to give birth to her son Jack in Grimsby.

She said: "I had my first child in Newham University Hospital, London, but Oliver was not allowed to stay overnight with me.

"At Grimsby's maternity unit, staff provide beds for partners to stay overnight.

"My family are from Grimsby and they all gave good reviews of the area's maternity services.

"I have had excellent care and a good start to motherhood here in the UK. I am shocked to hear we are ranked only 23, I expected it to be higher."

Kerry Redford, 25, of Immingham, is due to give birth to her third child in Grimsby.

With her experiences of motherhood in the UK, she, too, was surprised by the report's findings.

She said: "I would have thought the UK is one of the best places to be a mum.

"I know I am happy to be a parent in this country."

Researchers say the UK's poor rating is partially down to higher infant and mother mortality rates than in other parts of Europe.

Last year, the UK ranked tenth – but a spokesman for Save The Children said the criteria had changed since then, so its fall to 23rd was not a fair like-for-like comparison.

One of the main differences is that the number of indicators has been reduced from 12 to five.

Julie Dixon, head of midwifery at Grimsby's Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital, said: "The Mother's Index uses indicators of maternal health, under-five mortality, as well as women's education, income and politics.

"As midwives, we liaise with women during their pregnancy, intrapartum and after delivery to ensure they have the appropriate individualised care, support and advice at every stage to ensure they and their baby are fit and healthy."

Sue Briggs, operational matron for women's services in Grimsby, said: "How accurate these findings are, is questionable after the criteria for measuring them was changed."
