This is South Wales --
HAVING moved here myself from South East England I feel as if I'm living in a crime-free zone these days.
Where I am from vigilance about locking the car while you are driving, double bolting your front door, avoiding underpasses and eye contact with strangers are all drummed in to you from the youngest age.
But here I find myself relaxing personal safety credos.
And this part of the world's relatively low crime threat and its falling crime stats are making Swansea a particularly attractive place for house buyers, say estate agents.
National crime statistics released at the start of the year showed Swansea to be the safest part of England and Wales to live, with a 2 per cent drop in crime. And this week the UK Peace Index backed that up with more positive news, both UK-wide and here, saying that violent crime has fallen over all, by 17 percent.
Julie Elliott, branch manager at Mumbles-based estate agents Fine and Country said since its business deals largely with second-home buyers, crime levels in the area are of particular interest to potential clients. There are a lot of factors people look at when they are buying a home, but the safety and the security of the area is one of the main concerns.
"We deal with a lot of properties in Mumbles, in the Swansea Marina area and Gower, and lots of those will be second homes, so they might be unoccupied for months at a time.
"So in that case buyers want to know that their property will be safe while they are away.
"Also we find the older buyers, who will be living alone, are particularly interested in the security and safety aspect."
She added: "This latest research — on top of the report we have had recently about Swansea being a safe place to live, one about us having one of the best schools, at Bishopston, and the fact that we have such wonderful beaches — all make this area very attractive to buyers."
The National Crime Statistics showed that the comparative crime rate for our local force is 41 per 1,000 population compared to the average in England and Wales of 68 per 1,000 population.
While the rate of murders and violent crime are falling faster in Britain than anywhere in Western Europe, with analysts crediting CCTV monitoring, DNA profiling, and falling alcohol consumption. Reported by This is 2 hours ago.
