Downsized units to feature in MG 6 saloon, 3 hatch and upcoming SUV

MG is preparing to launch a new family of modern GDI engines, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged unit that it says will rival Ford’s equivalent Ecoboost unit.

The GDI engine range, which will launch in China at the end of 2014 and come to Europe a year later, will also include 1.4 and 1.5-litre turbocharged units. The engines will be sold in the MG 3, MG 5 and mooted Nissan Qashqai rival, previewed by the MG CS concept at the Shanghai motor show, respectively. The MG 6 will likely get the 1.5 unit too.

“Our benchmark for the 1.0-litre has to be the Ford Ecoboost engine,” said MG’s head of powertrain, former Ricardo UK managing director Paul McNamara. “Ford has got the technology to market first and changed perceptions. Our goal is to be competitive with their figures and attain the best real-world results possible.”

McNamara also confirmed MG was working on two dual-clutch transmissions; a wet clutch version that can handle 265lb ft of torque that will go on sale in China this year and a dry clutch version that can take 165lb ft of torque that will likely not be ready for sale until 2015.
